I am currently accepting new clients for clinical supervision only. If you are interested in receiving counseling services in the Norfolk area, please contact Suzan Thompson (757) 560- 0357 or KC Joachim (757) 377-3350
Clinical Supervision:
When providing clinical supervision, I work from the Discrimination Model posited by Janine Bernard, which highlights the supervisor's roles of Consultant, Teacher, and Counselor while assisting supervisees with Conceptualization Skills, Intervention Skills, and Personalization skills. This model is both thorough and simple, and "fits" the supervision process regardless of the developmental level of the counselor/supervisee.
I provide supervision in a variety of formats, including individual, triadic and group. As a supervisor, I feel a particular obligation to equip my supervisees as best I can for their future work with clients, and that includes helping supervisees select and develop their own theoretical approach to helping. It also includes facilitating "self-supervision" for lifelong learning as a professional helper.
Counseling:
Generally, my approach to the counseling process is "Person-Centered" which includes a philosophy that you are the expert on you - - I am a learner first, then a facilitator of helping you use different lenses to look at the issues you are dealing with. I will pay particular attention to the strengths that you naturally have to help you move in the direction you want to go. When necessary, we will use cognitive-behavioral techniques to help install any new habits you've decided to incorporate into your life.
